Set on the outskirts of Palma de Mallorca, this single-family residence by AVW Arquitectos settles into the Mediterranean landscape, drawing its logic from the horizon line and the quality of light that characterizes the island.

The volumetric composition is clear: a strong horizontal form with an upper floor that lifts from the ground, opening the building to the landscape below. This gesture sets the tone for what follows. The boundaries between inside and outside are never abrupt. They dissolve gradually, room by room, through expansive openings running the full length of the façade.

Material choices reinforce this calm. Exposed concrete, natural stone, and wood are used in neutral tones that do not compete with the architecture or the surrounding terrain. The dry textures and soft greens of the Mallorcan landscape become part of the interior experience, visible from every room and integrated into the house’s spatial sequence.

The window system played a central role in achieving spatial continuity. OTIIMA Fusion sliding system was implemented throughout the project, maximizing natural daylight and enabling near-complete transparency between indoor social areas and outdoor living spaces such as the terrace, pool, and garden. The hardware is visually minimized, ensuring that the primary focus remains on the surrounding views.

The resulting residence achieves a balance between generous scale and disciplined restraint. It is transparent where necessary and sheltered where appropriate, exemplifying how an effective technical solution can support the architectural vision without becoming a focal point

Arena Liga Portugal by OODA: Design, Façade and Minimal Frame Systems

In Porto, a new building is changing how sport, the city, and the community come together. OODA designed the Arena Liga Portugal to bring offices, training areas, research spaces, an auditorium, museum sections, and public facilities into one place. This project shows a modern approach to institutional architecture that is open, connected, and closely tied to its environment.

Located in Ramalde, the building occupies a fragmented urban site with diverse scales and disconnected public spaces. OODA transformed these conditions into opportunities, creating an architectural response that reconnects the city through landscape, light, and public engagement.

Architecture Inspired by the Spirit of Football

The design centers on two main architectural features.

At the ground level, a green podium stretches out from the landscape, forming a public space that links visitors to the building and the nearby city. The planted roof continues in the park, making it hard to tell where the building ends and nature begins, and inviting people to explore and move around.

Above the podium, a suspended cube holds Liga Portugal’s offices, research areas, and training rooms. Covered in a bold hexagonal pattern, this part of the building stands out in Porto’s skyline. Its shape hints at football by recalling the surface of a ball and the net of a goal but does so in a subtle way rather than copying them directly.

This approach creates a building that expresses its identity in an abstract way. It stands out visually but still looks elegant and understated.

The Hexagonal Façade: A Dynamic Architectural Envelope

One of the project’s most distinctive features is its hexagonal façade system, developed by Artworks.

The white honeycomb structure surrounds the glass building, adding layers that perform aesthetically and serve a purpose. During the day, it filters sunlight and brings depth, texture, and shadow to the building. At night, the lights inside turn the tower into a glowing landmark, making it stand out in the city.

Beyond the visual aspect, the façade helps the building use less energy by blocking some sunlight but still letting in daylight and keeping the space open. This mix of openness and protection is key to the building’s design.

Light becomes an active material, constantly changing the façade’s perception throughout the day and across the seasons.

Transparency as an Architectural Strategy

Extensive glazing behind the hexagonal screen is a key part of the project’s identity.

OODA designed the building as a translucent space that connects visually with the city. The large glass areas let in more natural light, improve the feel of the space, and make it more open, which matches the institution’s goal to connect with the public.

This design needed glazing systems that could provide large glass surfaces with as few visual breaks as possible.

The large pivot doors give the building a sense of scale and permanence suited to its national importance. Their simple design fits the rest of the façade, so the entrances look elegant and understated while still impressing visitors.

The renovation and expansion of the Gulbenkian Center of Modern Art revise the relationship between the building and its surrounding gardens.

The intervention introduces new connections between interior galleries and exterior landscape areas. This required extensive glazed surfaces capable of delivering thermal comfort, acoustic insulation, and security, which are essential features in museum environments.

House P is a family house located in a quiet suburban area of Belgium, surrounded by mature trees that create a private green enclave. Designed by Vandenborre Architecten, the project focuses on integrating the house into its natural surroundings, maintaining clean and minimalist lines.

Design concept

The residence is composed of horizontal slabs with solid façades on one side and fully glazed walls on the other. Clad in Egyptian off-white stone, the architecture coalesces weight and lightness. Terraces, patios, and a pool deck extend the living space outdoors, creating a continuous surface that connects interior and exterior.

The design was inspired by the existing trees and the site’s natural slope. The goal was to create a “floating landscape” where residents could experience nature from every room. Trees act as natural screens, providing privacy and framing views without the need for walls.

Layout and materials

House P spans three floors. The lower ground level contains functional spaces, including a garage, service areas, a bicycle shed, and an art gallery overlooking a small garden. The first floor hosts living areas, bedrooms, and the pool terrace, while the upper floor includes additional bedrooms and office spaces.

The chosen materials reinforce the house’s minimalist aesthetic. All floors and countertops feature white stone, complemented by brass and larch veneer accents, and all furniture is built-in, creating a euphonious design throughout the place.

Onze House: Architecture That Frames the Landscape

Set along the Mediterranean waterfront, Onze House, designed by architect Clara Solà-Morales, reflects an approach guided by light and place. It is a carefully articulated sequence of spaces that allows the inhabitant to feel immersed in the landscape while remaining sheltered, comfortable, and protected.

The project responds directly to the site’s topography and morphology. The plot is long and narrow, formed by the union of two parcels and bordered by neighboring buildings of considerable height. What could have been a constraint becomes a driver for the architectural concept: Onze House opens itself like a fan, unfolding diagonally toward the sea to multiply frontal and oblique views and ensure visual connection from nearly every space.

A Composition of Volumes and Shadows

The house is organized into three distinct volumes that adapt to the natural terrain. This fragmentation avoids excessive proportions and creates a dynamic composition of solids and voids, light and shadow.

These volumes rest on a continuous opaque wall that defines the façades facing future neighbors, ensuring privacy while structuring the interior program in a comb-like layout. The result is a house perceived not as a single object, but as a succession of autonomous bodies, each responding to the terrain and daily life.

Shadow is a defining element of the project, intentionally designed to shape comfort, atmosphere, and spatial experience.

Interior–Exterior as a Continuous Experience

At the heart of Onze House lies a fluid transition between inside and outside. The interior spaces are conceived as a sequence of continuous environments, scaled according to use and organized around two main anchors: a protected backyard connected to the vertical core and a living room that opens fully onto a large front terrace facing the sea.

To reinforce this continuity, the project introduces a double-skin façade on the front elevation. The inner skin, made entirely of glass, is independent from the outer one, allowing interior spaces to extend visually into shaded exterior thresholds. These intermediate spaces are neither fully inside nor outside—they are places to inhabit, protected from direct sun while remaining open to the landscape.

When fully opened, the sliding glass panels disappear into the walls, leaving behind a clean, uninterrupted opening where architecture steps back and the view takes precedence.

Precision That Serves Architecture

One of the greatest technical challenges of Onze House was resolving large openings that span two different floor heights without introducing elements that could disrupt the clarity of the space.

This is where OTIIMA Plus plays a defining role.

The system’s minimal, flush profiles allow the pavement to remain continuous between interior and exterior, dissolving the physical boundary between the two. The track is fully integrated into the wall and complemented by an insulating panel that guarantees high thermal and acoustic performance—essential in a project where openness must coexist with comfort.

The result is an integration that feels natural, almost invisible. Windows do not compete with the architecture; they support it. When open, they vanish. When closed, they remain discreet, allowing stone, wood, light, and landscape to define the space.

Material Integrity and Local Craft

Onze House is deeply rooted in its context through material choice. The envelope is built from “mares,” the local stone, used in thick, high-mass layers that give the house a sense of permanence, abstraction, and thermal inertia. Solid, geometric, and tactile, the stone reinforces the project’s relationship with place.

Remarkably, the entire stone envelope was executed by a single craftsman, using a material-specific metric and guided by deep knowledge of its geometry. This approach brings a human scale and authenticity to a house that is otherwise rigorously architectural.

The flooring, in tones similar to the stone, unifies interior and exterior surfaces. Terraces form horizontal platforms upon which the volumes rest, while vegetation emerges at their edges, gradually softening orthogonal boundaries and blending architecture into the surrounding landscape.

Architecture That Steps Aside

Onze House reflects a deliberate architectural approach in which context guides every decision, from the diagonal organization of space to the material weight of the stone walls.

Projects like this show that true luxury in architecture comes from thoughtful solutions that improve the experience while remaining almost invisible.

House in Caniçada: A Minimalist Concrete House Built for the Landscape

The House in Caniçada, designed by Carvalho Araújo, sits on the slopes overlooking the Caniçada reservoir in northern Portugal. The project is a transformation of an existing structure, using the original volume as a starting point and expanding it into a three-level home built to perform within a steep, heavily wooded site. It is a demonstration of how precise construction, minimal intervention, and strong structural clarity can shape an elegant architectural response.

The house is organized vertically across three floors. The top floor holds the most private areas of the home, where bedrooms and bathrooms are surrounded by glass walls and simple textile partitions instead of traditional opaque divisions. This choice creates a lightweight atmosphere that encourages visual openness while still offering privacy through layers rather than full enclosures. Below, the two lower floors are dedicated to social spaces. These levels open the house to the landscape, allowing daily life to unfold alongside the forest canopy and the water beyond.

At the heart of the project is the middle floor, which contains one of its most important technical and spatial gestures: two large openings positioned on opposite façades. One faces the arrival path; the other frames the reservoir. This creates a clean visual axis running through the house, allowing light, air, and perspective to cross the volume uninterrupted. It is a structural and spatial device that connects the dense forest directly with the open water, giving the building a sense of permeability and orientation.

Materially, the house is defined by exposed concrete and expansive glass surfaces. The concrete shell provides a monolithic presence, ensuring structural stability while accommodating wide openings and long spans without visual noise. In contrast, the glass elements soften the volume, reducing its impact on the landscape and creating a fluid relationship between interior and exterior. The glass also helps lighten the building’s vertical composition, which could otherwise feel heavy on the sloping terrain.

Landscape integration is a key aspect of the project. Almost all existing trees were preserved, and the building footprint was kept as compact as possible. The steep slope remains largely untouched, and external interventions are minimal, limited to essential paths and small terraces. This strategy results in a discreet house, nestled into the terrain and strongly connected to its natural surroundings. The architecture becomes a continuation of the site rather than an imposition on it.

Functionally and technically, the House in Caniçada represents a balance between solidity and openness. The exposed concrete provides durability and thermal mass, and the large glazed areas introduce lightness and expand the visual field. The house’s spatial logic, from the protected top floor to the open social levels, creates a clear experience of descending into the landscape. All elements, from structure to materials, work together to produce an efficient and highly resolved design.
