Inside The Contemporary Sophistication of the Devlin Residence in Los Angeles

Perched on a scenic promontory overlooking the Sunset Strip in the Hollywood Hills, the Devlin Residence by XTEN Architecture is a remarkable example of architectural innovation and contemporary opulence. The painstaking precision crafted in this residence effortlessly harmonizes diverse forms, striking a delicate balance between airiness and strength, as well as between transparency and seclusion. 

The Devlin Residence is a contrast study elegantly divided into two distinct forms. The lower volume, a dark grey plinth, embraces the gentle curve of the surrounding street. It gazes towards the canyon views on the east and the cityscape on the south while being embedded gracefully into the hillside on the north and west. The upper volume is a pristine white rectangle, delicately resting on the solid foundation below.

What sets the Devlin Residence apart is the precision of its design. The upper volume is meticulously carved with precise openings, allowing natural light to flood the interiors. These openings, accentuated by thin, continuous edges at the roof, walls, and floors, echo the refinement of cabinetry. The result is a space that feels both expansive and intimate, a sanctuary in the heart of the bustling city. 

The interior of the residence exemplifies meticulous design. An uninterrupted space effortlessly integrates the kitchen, dining, and living areas, unveiling breathtaking vistas of Los Angeles to the south. The main suite, located on the eastern side of the upper volume, offers panoramic views of the hills and the city below. The house is wrapped in white oak cabinetry and wall paneling, adding a touch of warmth to the contemporary aesthetic.

Perhaps his most famous principle, “Less is more,” summarizes Mies’ approach to design: stripping away the unnecessary to reveal the essential. His buildings are characterized by clean lines, open floor plans, and an absence of ornamentation. This philosophy encourages architects to prioritize spatial clarity and material integrity, resulting in modern and enduring structures.

The OTIIMA PIVOT system, enhancing stunning looks and modern style, graces every residential room. OTIIMA CLASSIC, with its 20mm thick vertical interlock, allows for expansive glazed surfaces while ensuring remarkable water tightness, air permeability, wind-load resistance, and thermal insulation features.
