The Nautical Building revitalizes the entrance to Cascais by transforming the abandoned Hotel Nau into a contemporary landmark that redefines the surrounding urban landscape. The building creates a strong presence with an open, dynamic plaza that enhances accessibility and interaction. Drawing inspiration from Cascais’ traditional arcades, the sculptural porticos at the ground level mimic the fluid movement of the sea, their forms shifting with the changing light. A central courtyard adorned with native vegetation fosters tranquility within the urban setting. The architects designed the residential towers with a rational modular layout, optimizing space and natural light. At the same time, the facade boasts an impressive array of ceramic-clad shutters comprising 856 pivoting and fixed panels comprising 29,104 ceramic pieces. This innovative design offers shading and a captivating interplay of transparency and opacity.
Rooted in Cascais’ maritime heritage, the Nautical Building translates nautical themes into a contemporary architectural language reflected in its materials, colors, and forms. The deep blue ceramic cladding pays homage to Portugal’s rich tradition of blue-tiled facades, a hallmark of Portuguese architecture since the 17th century. Positioned along the coastline, the building blends historical references with modern simplicity, honoring Cascais’ dual identity as both a royal retreat and a fishermen’s haven. With its bold yet respectful presence, the Nautical Building is a landmark of modern Portuguese architecture that connects profoundly to its cultural and environmental context.
